From imperial mausoleum to papal fortress, Castel Sant'Angelo is a stone book in which two thousand years of history are superimposed layer upon layer. Built around 123 AD as the tomb of Hadrian and his dynasty, in Late Antiquity it was incorporated into the Aurelian Walls as a defensive bastion. Its name recalls the apparition of the Archangel Michael during the plague of 590, while in the Middle Ages the massif became a stronghold contested by baronial families and the papacy. Connected to the Vatican by the Passetto di Borgo, it offered refuge to the pontiffs and during the Renaissance was enriched with frescoed apartments, loggias, and hanging gardens. Then came the bastions, the prison, the barracks, and finally the museum. Following the Roman ramp, the papal halls, and the terraces overlooking Rome, the tour traces the traces of each phase and reveals how the same monument served as a tomb, fortress, residence, and prison.
